Wolves still in the mix after matchday 29

14 03 2010

Wolves fans should be happy after the weekend's set of results.

So there we go, another matchday over and Wolves still have their Premier League destiny in their own hands.

Injury time goals from Nicklas Bendtner and Adam Johnson for Arsenal against Hull and Manchester City against Sunderland respectively have ensured that Wolves came out the big winners from this weekend’s games.

Wolves have two tricky games coming up in a four day period starting next Saturday when they face Aston Villa followed by West Ham on Tuesday, (both live on Sky Sports HD). I think the most Wolves fans can realistically expect from these games is two or three points. I wonder whether Mick McCarthy will change his team slightly for Villa, (without incurring a £25,000 fine) with Tuesday’s relegation battle in mind. Even with our best team out, Villa have the pace, strength and skill to bully us all over the pitch. It may sound pessimistic but it’s the truth. Although like ours, West Ham’s home record is patchy, I still believe they have better quality in their squad than we do and we will be in for a tough night in East London.

Wolves’ fans yesterday were fantastic. Although there were numerous nervy moments (i.e. 11 Burnley corners/Brian Jensen running up to score from them at the end), they were great getting behind the team when it mattered most. Even old renditions of Ring of Fire echoed around the wooden seated away end.

It was nice to see a set of fans other then ours booing their own manager when substitutions are made. Burnley’s fans went ballistic at Brian Laws when he decided to withdraw Andre Bikey and Chris Eagles at 0-2. You can only laugh to yourself. Another huge factor in us winning yesterday was the early exit of Danny Fox. A great set piece taker and undoubtedly someone who may have caused us problems late in the game.

The sight of Dave Edwards travelling with the squad to Turf Moor is a boost; you would assume the Welshman can’t be too far away from the first team scene again if McCarthy is getting him involved.

The only other injury concern is Michael Kightly. McCarthy said a week or so ago that he wasn’t fully involved yet so it could be a case of seeing him for the final three games or so. We can’t afford to throw players in now who aren’t up to match speed, even if they may be better than the players we have out there.

One wonders what has happened to Geoffrey Mujangi Bia? He was watching in the stands yesterday along with Edwards, Greg Halford, Andy Surman and Richard Stearman and looked detatched from the rest even when walking to and from the dressing room at the start of each half. After a couple of appearances against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, he hasn’t been given any first team action whatsoever. Ironically his former teammate at Charleroi, Adlene Guedioura has sprung into life at Molineux and is quickly becoming a fans’ favourite. What I love about him is the fact he has come here with no fear and will put his body on the line for the team. He is fairly quick, will run at defenders and has skill to boot. Definitely the kind of player we should be signing in the summer even if we are relegated.  I wonder whether one was bought to look after the other so to speak. Maybe McCarthy thought Mujangi Bia would help settle Guedioura down? Who knows…… That’s all from me. Up the Wolves!

Oh and one other thing…Any chance of the Premier League taking the obligatory nine points from Portsmouth to put all our minds at rest. The longer they leave it…you do wonder.

Any danger of Andrew Surman getting a game? The lad is quality and needs to be given the chance to prove himself. Gotta be better than Jarvis!
