World Cup watch: Milijas, Doyle and Guedioura play in warm-up matches

30 05 2010

Guedioura will be hoping to make Algeria's final squad for South Africa.

Nenad Milijas played 45 minutes in Serbia’s 1-0 defeat to minnows New Zealand last night.

Nemanja Vidic was forced to appeal to Serbia fans for calm as they rioted during the game in Klagenfurt.

During the second half in Austria, fans threw flares and missiles onto the pitch while a number of fans ran onto the pitch before being captured by stewards. Vidic had to speak over the tannoy to calm fans with New Zealand apparently ready to abandon the game.

The trouble calmed but Serbia were unable to salvage anything from the game following Shane Smeltz’s first-half strike.

On Friday night both Adlene Guedioura and Kevin Doyle featured in Ireland’s 3-0 win over Algeria in Dublin.

Guedioura made his debut for Algeria at right-back with Dolyle partnering Robbie Keane in attack for Ireland.

Guedioura hit the woodwork late on for the Africans.

Wolves’ Johnny Gorman will start in attack for Northern Ireland against Turkey tonight.

The 17-year-old was called up by Nigel Worthington but wouldn’t have expected to be thrown into the starting eleven.

Worthington is quoted as saying:  “He captures people’s imagination because he’s so young, he’s at Repton School in England and he’s a very bright boy.

“I’ve watched him a couple of times in practice sessions prior to this tour and he’s caught my eye so I thought it was an ideal opportunity to bring him along and work with him closely.

“He’s done nicely the couple of days we’ve been here and I’ve no qualms about putting him in.”

Northern Ireland:

A Blayney (Linfield), A Little (Rangers), R McGivern (Manchester City), G McAuley (Ipswich Town), S Craigan (Motherwell) – captain; R Garrett (Linfield), C Evans (Manchester United), K Braniff (Portadown), J Mulgrew (Linfield), J Gorman (Wolverhampton); R Patterson (Coleraine)
